Purpose of meeting
Discuss surveys of teachers and students, in order to assess impact of
technology on instruction.

Our improved computer labs have been in place for over a year now. We would like to understand the impact of this technology on our students and teachers.
Are teachers and students using computers more?
How is the school progressing in its use of computers as part of the instructional curriculum?
What has been the impact on instruction?
These are not just idle questions. We'll use the survey results to (1) understand how local community use of computers and the internet has changed over the period of a year; (2) justify/document improvements in instructional technology as part of grant proposals; and (3) focus our attention on areas of improvement.
We decided to redo last year's survey and to create two new surveys, one of students, the other of teachers.
In May, 2003, we'll survey students using the identical computer/community survey from last year. It has questions like, "Do you have a computer at home?", "Do you know how to use a computer?" This gives us a somewhat apples-to-apples comparison of changes over the course of a year. However, because the survey focuses mostly on community use of computers, and not on instructional impact, this survey doesn't satisfy all of our needs.
In September, 2003, we'll survey students, using a survey that focuses on content/activities/skills/methods of student use of computers. It'll be no more than 2 pages long (i.e., 1 sheet, back and front). We'll give it to ESL, ABE/GED, and (perhaps) high school diploma students.
In May, 2003, we'll survey teachers to understand their use of computers in the classroom, and what training they see as necessary for effective integration of computers into the curriculum.
The Technology Committee will develop these two new surveys.

Jim Write up draft versions of teacher and student surveys, using feedback from Tech Committee meeting.
