consensus on system architecture on on Phased Acquisition Plan

Meeting Summary
1.
Architecture. Jim reported on his and Carolyn’s
discussions with Clint Walker (the district’s networking expert), as well on
Jim’s discussions with the Santa Cruz school district and the Fair Oaks Senior
Center. Jim described an approach that
uses “thick” client machines with O/S and program stability enforced through
“ghosting”. In a nutshell, this means
there’s a master copy of the Windows C and D drives that is stored on the
network. From time to time, we push
this master copy onto all the student computers. This resolves system maintenance problems and provides teaches
with a stable, consistent platform. From
the student’s point of view, the computer looks and behaves exactly the same as
one he or she works with in the library or at home.
After discussion, the committee members reached a consensus to use this
“Ghosting” architectural model.

Phased Plan. We foresee a proposal composed of three
distinct phases.
Phase I. Room 25 lab
Phase II. Room 3 lab
Phase III. Remaining classrooms.
Implementation of the plan of course depends on many presently unknown factors,
but we would like to see Phase I completed within six to 12 months, with the
entire plan completed within 3 years.
In each phase, our primary educational goals are: educational resource, community access, and special

3. Funding. In addition to the Federal grants that Carolyn has found, Carolynn described a possible local funding source: The East Palo Alto Technology Access grant. Although the deadline for submittal is October 26th, there’s a possibility that this source may be useful to us.
